CHRISTMAS IS A difficult time for the Irish Blood Transfusion Service - in early December, they said they needed 10,000 blood donors just to maintain their supplies over the season.
If you donated recently, your efforts were greatly appreciated: Just look at this message from grateful parent thanking a platelet donor for helping to “rescue” their Christmas.
To the person out there who took time out of their day to donate platelets which went to St John’s ward, Crumlin, you are the reason my child has gone from a sick, very tired little girl back to her usual lovely self in 24 hours… We can rescue what is left of Christmas. Thank you whoever you are.
The service posted the message on their Facebook page as an example of how “valuable” their donors are.
“Blood and platelet donors make a huge difference to the lives of others as do the wonderful staff at Crumlin Children’s Hospital,” they wrote.
The message has been shared hundreds of times, and inspired other parents to thank the blood and platelet donors who have helped their children:
My daughter received platelets at six weeks old and now she’s a happy, cheeky, lovable six-year-old girl/diva.
My son received eight platelet infusions from birth until he was six weeks old. We never got the chance to thank the donor. Now he is a happy, healthy seven-year-old boy. Heartfelt thanks to all who donate.
As the mother of a child who received countless blood transfusions I know exactly the gratitude this parent feels. Words couldn’t express it.
